The personal bond between pet and owner extends to mental health; many pet parents also confide in their pets as they would with a best friend. A significant 79 percent of participants agreed that they engage in conversations with their pets as if they were human, seeking their companionship and even asking them questions or seeking advice. This highlights the important role that pets can play in providing emotional support and serving as a source of comfort for their owners' mental well-being.
The bond between pets and owners doesn't just include daily activities. When it comes to a family holiday, 48 per cent of pet owners take their pets with them. 4 per cent of these even make sure to take their pet abroad.
Claire Robinson-Davies also said, "Pet owners are making their pets a priority like they would any family member. They shape their schedule around them and include them in their activities. It shows that owners truly view them as a member of the family, which in turn, nurtures the bond between pets and their owners". [London] A poll of 600 people who have adopted their pet commissioned by Purina has found that 76 per cent considered the experience as valuable as bringing up a child. A staggering eight in 10 people who have rescued a pet from a shelter say it is the most rewarding thing they have ever done.
Almost six in 10 (59 per cent) believe they have "saved its life" and 30 per cent feel fulfilled by bringing it into a loving home.
For 59 per cent of adopters, the belief that they have "saved a life" is a significant factor.
Additionally, 63 per cent expressed immense happiness in witnessing their furry friend become happier, while 33 percent treasured the trust gained from their pet after coming from an abusive background.
It's not just the pets who benefit from these heartening adoptions 76 per cent said it made them learn to care about someone other than themselves and half loved seeing it become less afraid.
Martina McChowat, Brand Experience Lead for Purina.co.uk, said: "Pet adoption allows people to make a compassionate choice, however it should be considered carefully. Anyone thinking adopting a pet should take time to make an informed decision, understand the responsibilities and sometimes the possible challenges involved, and take care to find the right pet for them.
"It's amazing to see that so many people feel hugely fulfilled when they have made that choice. Adopting a pet can really feel like you've saved a life, as well as enriching your own through the multiple benefits that we know owning a pet can bring."
The research went on to find that if given the opportunity just 5% would buy from a breeder instead of rescuing another pet due to the positive experience they have had.
Cats, dogs and rabbits are the animals most likely to be adopted - with a handful having recused chinchillas, budgies, and snakes.
The positive impact of pet adoption extends beyond individuals. 94 percent see their pet as part of the family and almost two-thirds (63 percent) of respondents believe that their family unit has become stronger since adopting their pet, according to the statistics compiled by OnePoll.

Alley Cat Allies has launched a special investigation into a ghastly mass-shooting of feral cats, also called community cats, directed by the Port of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, that left at least 12 cats dead, maimed or missing. Alley Cat Allies, in collaboration with supporters in Australia and the Animal Justice Party of Australia, learned that the Newcastle Port Authority hired a contract killer to hunt down and shoot sterilized cats at the Stockton Breakwall, a public beach jetty, in December 2020. The next morning, devastated caregivers for the cats discovered a bloody, disturbing scene.

The Port Authority's attack came despite the fact that the cats were sterilized, vaccinated and cared for through a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program practiced by compassionate caregivers. TNR successfully reduced the number of cats at the Port from 100 to approximately 40 in recent years. These caregivers were neither warned about the hunt nor told that the Port took issue with community cats in the area to begin with.
