초록
다문화주의와 '동물의 권리'의 관계의 진전을 목적으로 하면서도, 본 보고서의 목적은 '동물의 권리'를 이론적으로 파헤치거나 이를 옹호하는 것이 아니다. 오히려 '동물의 권리'가 유사하게 존중되었던 시대, 즉 전쟁하에서 동물과 인간사회와의 관계에 대한 제반 사실을 파악하는 것을 과제로 삼고 있다.
왜냐하면 전쟁은 동원된 사람과 동물의 권리를 억압하는 한편, 마치 이러한 권리를 용인한 것처럼 선전하는 프로파간다를 퍼뜨리려 했기 때문이다.
여기서는 전시 하의 제국 일본 및 만주국에서 민족의 '독립'이나 '오족협화' 등 유사 다문화주의가 표방되는 가운데, 전쟁에 동원된 군마, 군견, 군용견, 군용비둘기를 둘러싼 환경이 어떤 것이었는지, 그것이 보장된 것인지, 아니면 소외된 것인지에 대해 생각해 보고자 한다.
그동안 역사학에서 간과되어 왔던 '동물의 권리'론에 대해 우선 여러 사실들을 파헤침으로써 이 문제에 대한 학문적 문호를 개방하고자 한다.
This study explores the complex relationship between multiculturalism and animal rights, with a primary focus on military animals in the Japanese army during wartime. Unlike traditional analyses that mainly focus on the theoretical aspects of animal rights, this research aims to elucidate the practical implications of these rights under the conditions of war.
It critically examines how wartime policies in imperial Japan and Manchukuo, which embraced multicultural ideals such as the "symbiotic coexistence of the five races," informed the treatment of non-human agents such as horses, dogs, and pigeons. These animals were extensively mobilized in military efforts, yet their welfare often contradicted proclaimed multicultural and animal rights values.
By integrating historical case studies with theoretical insights, this paper seeks to contribute to the ongoing academic discussion about the intersection of multiculturalism and animal rights, particularly under the extraordinary circumstances of conflict. The findings challenge existing narratives and encourage a reassessment of how multicultural policies practically affect animal rights during times of war.
